BIGBANG Occupy Top Two Slots on World Digital Songs
Chart
The
quintet pull off a chart feat only PSY could previously claim for Korean acts.
BIGBANG's comeback begins on an explosive note as the K-pop phenoms
occupy the top two slots on Billboard's
World Digital Songs chart. The feat makes them the fourth
K-pop act ever to top the list and gives them a feat that only PSY had previously accomplished.
"Loser," the band's new melancholy
hip-hop track, debuts at No. 1 on the tally, selling nearly 9,000 copies,
according to Nielsen Music, in the week ending May 3, 2015. The
trap-inspired "Bae Bae" lands at No. 2 after selling almost 8,000
copies. Remarkably, both songs were released in America on May 1, giving the
band a mere three days of sales.
Previously, the only K-pop act to hold World
Digital Song's top two spots was PSY on the chart dated April 27, 2013
when he sent "Gentleman" to No. 1 as "Gangnam Style" sat in
the runner-up position. "Gentleman" and "Gangnam
Style" held the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively for seven weeks until
they flip-flopped on the chart dated June 15, 2013, and "Gangnam
Style" led the tally with "Gentleman" in second place.
"Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman" then held the No. 1
and No. 2 slots respectively for another five weeks.
BIGBANG also becomes the fourth K-pop act to
top the ranking. Along with PSY, 2NE1 held the spot with "I Am the Best" (ruling for one week in November 2014 and another week in February 2015) as did BIGBANG's
own members G-Dragon and Taeyang for their collaboration "Good Boy" (one week in December 2014) which was officially
accredited to GD x TaeYang.
The chart-toppers list is also notable
for only including acts from YG Entertainment, is one of South Korea's
biggest record labels headed by Yang Hyun-Suk, who was one of Billboard's 2014 International Power Players. YG Entertainment is also
home to Epik High, WINNER, Jinusean, Akdong Musician, Lee Hi and more.
BIGBANG has teased they'll release more
than one new song at the top of every month until September, meaning they
could certainly rock World Digital Songs (and potentially other charts)
throughout the entire summer.
